A German Romantic composer and critic known for his piano cycles and songs.
Robert Schumann trained originally as a pianist before an injury to his hand redirected him toward composition and music criticism. Much of his early output is for solo piano, including character-piece cycles such as Kinderszenen and Carnaval, and he later wrote symphonies, chamber music and songs. He married the pianist and composer Clara Schumann in 1840.
