Joseph Haydn

1732–1809

An Austrian composer who helped establish the classical forms of the symphony and string quartet.

Joseph Haydn spent much of his career in the service of the Esterházy family, a position that gave him the freedom to experiment across a long and prolific career. He wrote over a hundred symphonies and dozens of string quartets, and his piano sonatas remain a staple of classical-era keyboard repertoire.
