George Frideric Handel

1685–1759

A German-born composer who became one of the leading figures of Baroque music in England.

George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, worked in Italy and Hanover, and settled permanently in London, where he became a British subject in 1727. He is best known for his oratorios, including Messiah, and for orchestral suites such as Water Music, though his keyboard suites remain part of the standard repertoire.
