Franz Liszt

1811–1886

A Hungarian composer and virtuoso pianist who expanded the technical and expressive range of the instrument.

Franz Liszt was one of the most celebrated concert pianists of the nineteenth century, and his compositions — including the Transcendental Études, the Hungarian Rhapsodies and the Liebesträume — pushed piano technique to new extremes. He also worked as a conductor and teacher, and later in life took minor religious orders.
