Felix Mendelssohn was a child prodigy who became one of the most celebrated musicians of his generation as composer, conductor and pianist. He conducted a landmark 1829 performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion that helped renew wider interest in Bach's music, and his own output includes symphonies, concertos and the piano collection Songs Without Words.
