Domenico Scarlatti

1685–1757

An Italian composer remembered almost entirely for his hundreds of one-movement keyboard sonatas.

Domenico Scarlatti spent much of his career in Portugal and Spain, in the service of the royal courts there. He composed more than 550 keyboard sonatas — single-movement pieces notable for their technical invention and their echoes of Iberian folk and dance music — that remain a cornerstone of harpsichord and piano repertoire.
